Pastéis de Belém

When in Belem, you go to Pastéis de Belém and eat pastel de nata, they say.  Like a good travel-to-eat food enthusiast, I did.  It was around noon by the time we got here and we hadn’t had breakfast.  So this looked like a good stop anyway, before we continued to explore this part of Lisbon.

We ordered some wine for brunch.  Yeah, who needs coffee!  Well, the husband does 🙂

A soft chocolate doughnut style dessert (I’m ashamed I don’t know what this is called and I call myself a food-enthusiast!), a crepe (which I thought would be crepe) which turned out to be what they call in US an egg roll, drenched in oil, but tasty with vegetable stuffing, two pastel de nata, and then more later.  The hubs got some lobster stuff.

While not a complete lunch, we had something to satiate our tummy here.

The pastel de nata – or the egg tart pastry, definitely try. They served it warm. The sweet custard and the buttery flaky crust was a perfect mix of sweet and salt. 

I tried it two days later at the Lisbon airport, leaving for Seville from a store there.  It wasn’t warm then, so didn’t taste as good, but was still good.

I’m planning on giving it a shot at home, one of these days.

The place looks and feels classic Portugese, with the Azulejos décor and old-school iron doors and windows.

Don’t miss this, if you’re in Lisbon.  That’s enough to get any foodie to travel to this side of Lisbon, even if you weren’t planning to.  But don’t miss Belem area for travel too.
