From Jatiupra to Delhi to Amritsar, New Kundan Dhaba was our first dinner spot in the city of Amritsar. It was past 10 and we were limited by options, so we went ahead with the hotel person’s input.
The food was your usual fare, nothing stood out particularly. We tried a paneer (cottage cheese) curry, dal makhni – a creamy black lentil dish, that takes long to cook, and sarso ka saag – mustard greens slurry, seasonally available in the winters.
We ordered an assortment of Indian flatbreads to go with the curries – some tandoor rotis, some lachcha parathas, and makki di roti or cornmeal flatbreads (for the mustard greens curry).
The papad was much thicker, like khichiya papad, but tasted as though made from lentils. They provided a big plate of what seemed like fresh house pickles, Indian style.
And we finished it off with gulab jamuns and lassi.
