I went there yesterday! I’m on a break this week. Staycation – quite unlike me, but I’ve done that twice in the past few months – December and now. But quite enjoying it. Binge watching The West Wing on Netflix and going out to restaurants in the city everyday, except Monday, where I just did the binge watching.
The place used to be Gobo before, which was one of the places I took food to-go plenty of times. This new place, new look is super cute. There is absolutely something about the exposed brick wall look. And those pretty lights, open space, communal table and a little area for the marble-look tables, the decor was so on point.
If I have a commercial place, the look would be something along the lines of this. Atleast with the lights and all.
The food was great too. The spicy mung bean jelly with a great sauce / oil dressing with probably what would be Sichuan peppercorns and all that jazz. Served cold.
The fried spiced tofu looked to be very firm but it was a complete surprise with the outer layer still being crispy but extremely tender and soft tofu inside. It must’ve been an art handling those while frying, still retaining the shape.
And then we ended up ordering two noodles – the mushroom ones and I always have to order the dan dan noodles. The mushroom noodles were good, and overall well seasoned. The dan dan noodles weren’t balanced on the taste. Mapo Tofu from midtown is still on the top of my list for the great dan dan noodles I’ve eaten, along with Cafe China. These ones had a lot of garlic. I like garlic, so that wasn’t an issue, but this wasn’t the dan dan noodles I was expecting.
The food was still, super good. And the presentations – very good looking, keeping par with the place decor.
Dessert was okayish for me, red bean paste stuffed in pumpkin / sticky rice mixture, deep fried. It was a bit less sweet for my liking.
We had wine and a silver line tea to go with the food. And here’s something funny that happened. The tree had a very subtle flavor and even more subtle color. So the first time they got it to us, the friend decided to let it seep for a little more to get more flavors. In the meantime, one of the staff came to get some more water for the tea. When we told them we were letting it sit for a little more, she said that would make it bitter and it shouldn’t be in there for too long. And we all burst out laughing. Oh! The things you learn.
