Tofu Mango Gobo NYC Vegan Restaurant

Vegan. What I love about vegan places – I can eat anything without having to worry about whether its pure vegetarian or not.

In my exploration of New York city vegan restaurants, I’ve always had great experiences. Gobo is undoubtedly one of them. Been there over about 40 times. Contemporary decor. Almost open kitchen.

The Five Spice Tofu Rolls with Mango Puree are my favourite quick bites here.

Roti Canai with Malaysian curry – go for it.

Hand Wrapped Steamed Vegetable Dumplings are OK. You may skip it.

Salt and Pepper Edamame, always nice.

From the small plates, Seitan Skewers with Green Tea Mustard Sauce are good.

I loved the pine nut vegetable medley with lettuce wraps. Must have.

For the large plates, I’ve tried plenty as well.

My favourite is the Vietnamese Stir-fry – thin flat rice noodles (pad thai noodles, for people who haven’t had it, not sweet) with spicy sauce. More often than not, I have eaten this.

Singapore Stir-fry Mai-fan are good – glass noodles with vegetables and proteins.

Both of these are similar in taste, only difference being the type of noodles. The konnyaku (pressed Japanese root vegetable flour with a crisp chewy texture) is awesome.

The Wrapped Tofu in Thai Red Curry Sauce is good, the curry sauce is a bit too saucy and tangy but the noried tofu is yummy.

Smoked Beijing Style Seitan is good,  coconut rice goes well with it.

Another favourite here is the mango with protein nuggets. The brown rice is nice and grainy – how I like it.

For desserts, I’ve had the mango, coconut and tapioca pudding which I did not enjoy as much, but the multi-layered chocolate cake dusted with green tea was not bad for a vegan cake.

Fresh squeezed juices – try apple carrot ginger. Very refreshing.

Three and a half stars
